This iPhone design features the national flag of Montserrat, an island in the Caribbean that is the only country outside the Republic of Ireland to celebrate St Patrick's Day as a full public holiday. The island owes its Irish heritage to those deported in the 17th Century to the island of Montserrat to work alongside African slaves as forced labor.
The flag is unusual as it comprises the British flag, the Union Jack, representing the island as an British Overseas Territory, together with the coat of arms of Montserrat showing Erin, the female personification of Ireland dressed in green, against a cross and holding the golden harp of Ireland.
Today the island will be celebrating St Patrick's Day the Caribbean way, in a tropical paradise. I'd love to be there today. Perhaps next year. In the meantime here's a souvenir of that Emerald Isle in the Caribbean...
